Dubai Business Women Council Highlights Women’s Role in Family Businesses during American University of Sharjah Business Forum

Sharjah, UAE, 2012 – The Dubai Women Business Council (DBWC) has shared its insights on the role of women in the success of family businesses in the GCC during the recently concluded American Universityof Sharjah (AUS) Business Forum 2012. Mrs. Raja Al Gurg, President of DBWC, represented the Council in the Forum and took part in the panel discussion.
Organized under the theme “Family Businesses in the GCC: Challenges and Opportunities in the Global Economy”, the Forum examined the impact of the global economic meltdown on family businesses as well as issues related to leadership, succession, governance across generations and participation of women in the family business.

Mrs. Raja Al Gurg said: “Family businesses will continue to play a greater role as economic catalysts for the region. The AUS Business Forum is therefore taking the right step by supporting the growth of family businesses through high-profile discussions that explore fresh opportunities and identify evolving challenges being faced by family businesses in the GCC. Dubai Women Business Council strongly supports such initiatives as it complements our efforts to encourage more women to become involved in the socioeconomic development of the Arab world.”
Mrs. Raja Al Gurg  – Forum discussed impact of global economic meltdown on family businesses as well as issues related to leadership, succession and governanc
During the forum, Mrs. Al Gurg pointed out that family businesses, which account for some 90 per cent of businesses in the Middle East, have a major role in the region’s growth, job creation and competitiveness. Their sustained success is key to the region’s long-term economic development. She said, “As family businesses deal with the challenges posed by the financial crisis, increased international openness of the Gulf region as well as their own expansion, they need to adopt newer ways of running their business and managing their wealth in order to remain competitive and sustainable. Most importantly, family businesses need to put in place strong corporate governance and succession planning framework.”
Founded in 2002, DBWC motivates women to be productive members of the society, while encouraging role models to rise up from the ranks and inspire other women around the world, especially in the Arab region, to discover their true potential. DBWC organizes the high-profile monthly event ‘Majlis Business’ to provide information about the latest knowledge, skills and best practices for women entrepreneurs and leaders.

The Council has been visiting institutions of higher education across Abu Dhabi to gain support for AKOUN’s advocacy.

The AKOUN workshop was held at ALHOSN’s Male Campus and was presented in Arabic and English. Esmod Dubai Partners with Wafi Mall to Open Esmod Fashion Store

‘Esmod Fashion Designers’ Incubator’ to exclusively showcase creations of Esmod graduates and hone their business smarts, foster ‘made in UAE’ pride

Dubai, UAE, March 13th, 2012 – Esmod Dubai, the only French institute fully dedicated to fashion in the region, has announced its partnership with Wafi mall in Dubai to open the ‘Esmod Fashion Designers’ Incubator’ that aims to usher in the UAE’s next generation of fashion designers.

Established in line with Esmod Dubai’s corporate social responsibility agenda, the 2,500 sq ft facility provides a unique and highly visible talent incubator for selected Esmod graduates to showcase their collections, accessories and other exclusive creations.

The store will be used as a platform to guide participating alumni through the design, manufacturing, branding and marketing of their collections. The goal is to enhance the business skills of aspiring fashion entrepreneurs while promoting a ‘proudly made in the UAE’ mentality among the country’s fashionistas.

Importantly, the store displays exclusive individual pieces which are reasonably priced, with only a minimum markup, to be in line with market prices and to also ensure that Esmod designers generate maximum revenue.
Moreover, a dedicated space has been arranged within the store for Wafi customers to benefit from Esmod Dubai’s popular Make Up short courses and also the Perfume Discovery & Creation course. A unique new facet of the Perfume Discovery course is that participants will have their perfume creations produced and handed over to them in a personalized 50 ml bottle. Esmod also revealed that a gallery space for fashion related exhibitions will regularly showcase creations.

Since 2006 Esmod Dubai has been pursuing its mission of developing the Middle East’s fashion industry through the upholding of the highest professional fashion education standards and training opportunities. The institution’s latest corporate social responsibility initiative supports this goal by encouraging fashion brand development and facilitating the business startups of graduates.

“We embrace the responsibility of our actions and thus want Esmod Dubai’s fashion education programs to have a positive impact on the region’s fashion industry. We owe it to the parents who have entrusted their loved ones to us to develop the best skills in fashion design from our wards and provide them with access to unique career opportunities. The ‘Esmod Fashion Designers’ Incubator’ will serve as an ideal platform for them to start a successful fashion business,” explained Tamara Hostal, Director and Founder of Esmod Dubai.

“We are very pleased to have Esmod institute in Wafi, Esmod Dubai is the only French Fashion Institution fully dedicated to vocational fashion training in the Middle East.  Fashion is always of the time in which you live. It is not something standing alone. Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening,” said Layla Al Harmoudi, Marketing Manager at Wafi Mall.
Esmod Dubai recently welcomed its second batch of students for its 3-year French Higher Diploma in Fashion Design and Pattern Making. Aside from the higher diploma, Esmod Dubai also offers a one-year Foundation program and workshops on Fashion, Fashion Photography, Professional Fashion Make-Up, Make-Up Special Effects, Perfume Discovery & Creation, and Textile Science-Manipulation. The institution offers as well short courses and lectures on various fashion topics to the public.
